Bare Bones present “Going Straight” by Richard Harris
Michael, the one time boss of an East End criminal gang, has retired from his lucrative life of crime and now lives in some luxury in Spain with his new wife Francine. When Michael’s old ‘number one’, Ray, is invited to go out to Spain to spend a short holiday with his old criminal boss, Ray’s wife Brenda is suspicious. Why, after not being in touch for more than two years, is Michael suddenly being so friendly? Whilst Ray is true to his old criminal code of trust and loyalty, Brenda is suspicious. She’s known Michael too long to believe that this seemingly friendly gesture is just an act of goodwill. Then suspicion grows when Polly, a young female film researcher, arrives at the villa seeking inside knowledge of their past exploits in the criminal underworld. Whilst playwright Richard Harris is perhaps best known for such plays as ‘Stepping Out’ and ‘Outside Edge’, his principal focus has been on crime and detective works for television. He has been a prolific contributor to series such as The Saint, The Sweeny, The Avengers and A touch of Frost. He is therefore well placed to write about the many who have sought refuge in Spain after a life of crime in the UK. Going Straight will be performed at Upton Bishop Millennium Hall on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st March at 7.30pm. Tickets at just £5 are available from the Bare Bones Box Office (01981-540820) or at the door on the evening of performance.
BELL RINGING- Twenty years ago, following a very generous legacy, the Upton Bishop church bells and bell frame were refurbished and rehung. Since then we have had one or two successful bands but more recently the bells have not been used a great deal except for
special occasions, by visiting ringers and for weddings/funerals. We are now very pleased to appoint, as Tower Captain, Mr Michael Tunnicliff, a very experienced ringer of both
church and hand bells. He will arrange for the bells to be rung, as and when required, carry out any necessary bell maintenance and train new recruits with the aid of other District Ringers.
It would be good to have a full band of our own again (minimum 6 ringers) and to hear the bells ringing. You can learn how to ring from about twelve years upward, height being more important than age, and an ability to climb the tower stairs is the only top age limitation! Ringing is a matter of technique rather than strength so almost anyone can give it a try. Why not phone Michael on Ross 764497 or email mike.tunnicliff@talk21.com to make further enquiries or to arrange a visit, you might enjoy it. The preferred Practice Night at the Upton Bishop tower will be Friday.
To contact a member of the clergy, please telephone Neil Patterson at Weston-under-Penyard Rectory on 01989 567229
The Upton Bishop Church APCM has been set for Thursday 26th April, 7.30pm, at the Moody Cow by kind invitation of Dawn and Chris. This meeting is open to all residents of the parish and we look forward to seeing you there.
Brenda Robbins has announced that she has decided to step down as Tower Captain. Neil and the PCC would like to take the opportunity to thank Brenda not only for organising bell ringers for so many important village occasions over the years but also for her contribution as churchwarden, PCC treasurer, churchyard mapmaker, leaflet writer, Christmas tree decorator and many other duties. She and Mary Voss for many years also created and distributed the parish Christmas card. The church is heavily dependent on people like Brenda who give so generously of their time. Brenda has recruited Michael Tunnicliff to take over as Tower Captain and he has agreed to taken on responsibility for the bells.
Many hands make light work! On Saturday 17th March we will hold our annual Spring Clean in the church, to make it nice, dust- and cobweb-free in time for Mothers' Day. Linda has once again produced her To Do List and it is in the church for anyone to sign up for a job. Please put your name on the list if you can spare a bit of time on the day, or indeed the day before. The dusters and brushes will start work at 10.00 am but, if that is not possible for you, please do come along later. It turned into a jolly morning last year and refreshments will once again be provided!
